Bent Elevator Trailing Edges

The day started with a trip to the Lowe's to obtain the supplies (wood & hinges) needed to build the bending tool diagramed in the instruction manual. I chose to build mine 6-feet long. Why? I dunno... actually I thought I remembered reading somewhere online that the bending tool for the ailerons and flaps needs to be 6-feet. I figured it was better to be long than short, as I can always trim it down.

I clamped the piece of wood together and laid out my hinge spacing.

I had to sand a little off the edges where the hinges attached for clearance, but here is the finished tool.

Before bending, elevator I taped a 1/8" wood dowel to the inside of the bend to prevent the TE from creasing during bending. I got this from the Orndorff videos, and it seemed to work pretty well.

Update… After finishing the elevators and trim tab, I think a 1/8” dowel may have been too small. I am not sure what the proper size is, but if I had to do it again, I would investigate further.

This is about as far as I could get it to bend with the dowel in place.

The finished bend. Good enough for me!
